The winter solstice is just a little more than a month away and temperatures are beginning to drop rapidly in the Northern hemisphere. There's already cold fogs enveloping Michigan every morning and it's a daily reminder that autumn will end soon.
It doesn't seem cold enough yet for some animals here. I still hear the honking of a few geese that are stubborn enough to stick around funnily enough. As if they need more reason to stick around and terrorize or annoy the locals. The squirrels and rabbits that visit our yard from mid-spring to mid-fall are all smart enough to know when it's too cold for daily foraging and I wish the geese would learn to be accommodating like them.
Even if it is cold I still like being outside, I guess you could say I'm nearly as stubborn as the geese, but I can't help it since I love seeing nature at what I think is it's prettiest. Sure, most trees have shed their leaves, the flowers have all gone, and some see winter as the season of death. Without winter, there could be no new life come springtime, and that alone is enough for me to enjoy the cold, snow covered landscape. It's ideal for taking photos, each winter is always different and when the flowers sprout and bloom they will also be different.
So I say for those who only see winter as season of death, remember that without death, there can be no life. The earth will always give back what it takes and for that, we must be thankful.
