There are many stereotypes when it comes to gamers, even in today's world. Many non-gamers still believe that gaming is something for guys and display great surprise when they find out girls play video games and that if you play video games that you must be some strange loner who hates social activities. Back in the day, if you played video games on your own free time, you were pretty much a social pariah, lumped in socially awkward nerds.
Today it's rare to find someone who isn't a gamer or considers them self a nerd because being one or both of those has become cool. You'll even find people in my generation who laugh at those who claim gamer or nerd status because we "were nerds/gamers before it was cool". In reality, being a gamer is just where things were headed in the 90s with technology becoming something every household was starting to possess and it took off after the millennium. It hasn't slowed down since and will continue to grow and evolve into things we're now only imagining.
I do wonder what the industry will become and where the gaming experience will go now that Virtual Reality headgear is widely available to everyone. The gaming world has come a long way. It's comparable to a rollercoaster, slowly making it's way to the top, before coming up over the drop and speeding it's way down, only to go into a loop. At the end it comes to a stop, only to be filled up and sent on it's way again and again.
